  • Monday and Wednesday

    9:50-11:05 or

    11:10-12:25

*This is the same class offered in two different time slots

  • 7th-8th Grade

  • Skyline Family Fellowship

  • $800 per semester (based on $400 per class/credit). Multi-student family discount ($50) is applied for families with students enrolled in Book and Pen courses with Laura McWhite at different levels.

  • Seeking to gain a better understanding of the world they live in, students in this survey course can earn both English and U.S. History credit. The class is designed to help middle school aged home schoolers improve their listening, reading, writing, thinking, and speaking skills. Students will read from a large variety of literary genres including: mythology & folklore, drama, poetry, fiction and nonfiction. They will practice writing skills using the IEW Framework for Structure & Style, using an EASY +1 approach to learning. This means I will introduce one new “dress-up” at a time and give students opportunities to practice using it until it is easy before adding another one. A dress-up is a grammatical part of speech such as a quality adjective, or an adverb sentence opener that I will expect students to add to their writing as part of the writing process. They will complete many types of short, weekly writing assignments which pivot between both the fiction and non-fiction genres. Since writing is more meaningful when you have a real audience, students will be expected to write for each other rather than just the teacher. Many weekly writing assignments will be group documents that all students can edit and read. Vocabulary and grammar exercises are also built into weekly lessons. Finally, each semester will culminate with FOUR five-paragraph essay projects–TWO for English and TWO for U.S. History– which students will work on throughout the semester.

Since authors can only tell stories about the world they live in, students can enhance their understanding of literature through a study of history. This course will begin with a review of the Civil War moving up to the present day. Students will be exposed to a variety of materials such as videos, primary and secondary historical articles, maps, charts, historical frames, and BIG questions–lots and lots of questions. They will read and write weekly on a variety of topics. They will also give weekly five-minute speeches on historical topics that they find interesting, and create their own personal history timeline, which will be a year-long project. In addition, using intuition, logic, credibility, and evidence, they will be introduced to the skills of a historian which include: claims testing, sourcing, causation, comparison, contextualization, and continuity and change over time. Successful completion of this course satisfies English and Social Studies requirements.

Students will have access to a personal grade report which will be updated weekly. Two grades will be tracked: one for English and one for History. Assignments will be grouped both by topic (History or English) and by week. This course has a zero tolerance policy for late work. • Seeking to gain a better understanding of the world they live in, students in this survey course can earn both English and Ancient History credit in the first semester and English and Alaska Studies credit in the second. The class is designed to help high-school aged homeschoolers improve their listening, reading, writing, thinking, and speaking skills. Students will read from a large variety of literary genres including: mythology & folklore, drama, poetry, fiction and nonfiction. They will practice writing skills using the IEW Framework for Structure & Style, which includes writing from Keyword Outlines, and using an EASY +1 approach to learning. This means the instructor will introduce one new “dress-up” at a time and give students opportunities to practice using it until it is easy before adding another one. A dress-up is a grammatical part of speech such as a quality adjective, or an adverb sentence opener that students will be expected to add to their writing as part of the writing process. They will complete many types of short, weekly writing assignments which pivot between both the fiction and non-fiction genres. Since authors can only tell stories about the world they live in, students can enhance their understanding of literature through a study of history. In the fall, using the OER (Open Education Resources) Website and the World History Project Course, students will first undertake a study of Ancient History beginning from Origins to about 1500 CE. This part of the course will cover four time periods and include a variety of materials such as videos, historic articles, maps, charts, historical frames, and BIG questions–lots and lots of questions. Then in the spring, we will use a number of different resources for a study of Alaska. Topics will include Alaskan geography, native cultures, Russian exploration and colonization, the purchase of Alaska by the U.S., the Goldrush, Alaska as a territory, Statehood, the Earthquakes of 1964 and 2018, and the PFD. Throughout the course, students will read from both primary and secondary historical sources, give weekly five-minute speeches on historical topics that they find intriguing, and create their own personal history timeline, which will be a year-long project. In addition, using intuition, logic, credibility, and evidence, they will be introduced to the basic skills used by all historians which include: claims testing, sourcing, causation, comparison, contextualization, and continuity and change over time. Successful completion of this year long course satisfies English and Social Studies requirements and earns students 1 credit for English and .5 credits for Alaska History and .5 credits for Ancient Civilizations.

*Why This Curriculum?- Twenty years ago, Scott discovered Math-U-See at a curriculum fair where its creator, Steve Demme, was presenting. From conversations with Demme, Scott learned that he had taught high school math in the public school system for 20+ years, but he was disillusioned that he couldn’t find a curriculum that provided adequate real-life problem solving from a mastery learning approach—so he created Math-U-See. Intrigued by the strong focus on word problems, Scott decided to give it a try, and he’s never turned back! He now understands more about the “why” of math, instead of just knowing the correct formula. One of his daughters likened Math-U-See to a “3D, full-color perspective of math, rather than a mere flat, black-and-white equation to be solved and quickly forgotten.” His three oldest daughters were well-prepared for college and real-life math, and his fourth daughter is thriving in math and following in her sisters’ footsteps. With Math-U-See, math skills and concepts are presented in a logical sequence. Lessons focus on demonstrating how and when to apply concepts in real-world scenarios, which gives students a deeper understanding. Math-U-See uses a mastery approach, allowing students to build a strong foundation of fundamental concepts and skills before moving on. Concepts build on one another and are applied and reviewed to broaden the student’s mathematical understanding.

Scott is looking forward, in these classes, to providing a significant amount of enrichment as well to help students become confident problem solvers, lovers of math, and life-long learners.
